MELGAR - Historical Visual Research & AI-Assisted Digital Reconstruction

Historical Visual Research & AI-Assisted Digital Reconstruction

Melgar is an ongoing long-term research and visual development project dedicated to the historical reconstruction of early nineteenth-century Arequipa through the life of Peruvian poet and patriot Mariano Melgar (1790–1815).

Rather than generating fictional imagery, the project combines historical investigation with contemporary digital art techniques to recreate people, environments and visual narratives as faithfully as possible.

Every illustration is developed through a multidisciplinary workflow involving:

• historical documentation and academic publications

• archival illustrations and paintings

• period architecture studies

• historical costume research

• genealogy and family testimonies

• comparison of written sources

• traditional drawing and visual development

• photography and photobashing references

• 3D layout and composition when required

• AI-assisted image synthesis used as one stage of the artistic workflow

Each image is reviewed, refined and often rebuilt multiple times to reconcile historical evidence with visual storytelling.

The objective is not to claim absolute historical certainty, but to create the most plausible visual interpretation currently possible while documenting the creative and research process.

This project continues to evolve as new references and historical evidence are discovered.
